Fall Hair in Costa Mesa: Four Looks From Our Chairs

Ra'pôr Newport Blvd and 17th Street · Costa Mesa

Fall is when people come in ready for a change. Summer color has faded, ends are tired, and everyone wants something that looks intentional again. Here are four looks that walked out of our two Costa Mesa salons this season, and what to ask for if you want one.

1. Long, face framing layers

Long face framing layers on dark brunette hair, cut at Ra'pôr on East 17th Street, Costa Mesa

Length stays, weight goes. Soft layers start around the cheekbones and fall in curved sections down the back, so the hair moves and bounces instead of hanging flat. It works best on medium to thick hair and looks just as good air dried with a little product as it does with a round brush blowout.

Ask for: long layers with face framing, keep my length, a blowout so I can see the shape.

2. Rich, glossy red

Rich glossy red hair color with long layers, done at Ra'pôr on East 17th Street, Costa Mesa

Red is the color people keep asking about this fall. A deep, glossy red flatters warm and olive skin tones and looks expensive in any light. The trick is keeping it vibrant: red fades faster than any other shade, so plan on a gloss between color appointments and a color safe shampoo at home.

Ask for: a dimensional red that suits my skin tone, plus a gloss plan to keep it bright.

3. Platinum textured crop

Platinum blonde textured crop with tapered sides, cut and colored at Ra'pôr Salon and Barber on Newport Blvd, Costa Mesa

For guys who want to make a statement. Hair is lifted to an icy platinum, then cut short and choppy on top with a clean taper at the sides and a little length left at the back. Going this light takes a careful lightening process to keep the hair healthy, so book with a colorist, not just a quick clipper cut.

Ask for: platinum lift and tone, textured crop on top, low taper.

4. Slick back taper

Slick back haircut with a clean taper, done at Ra'pôr Salon and Barber on Newport Blvd, Costa Mesa

The classic that never leaves. Length on top swept back with a matte product, with sides tapered tight around the ears and neckline. It looks sharp at the office and still works on the weekend. Plan on a cleanup every three to four weeks to keep the taper crisp.

Ask for: slick back on top, low taper on the sides, clean neckline.
